Building Momentum with Tiny Acts
On Doing the Thing When it Feels Hard
Something strange has happened.
I’m creating again. Little things, paper things, random art things, doodling with my daughter more regularly. Almost everyday. It’s been a while. Adulting had taken over.
What changed? I’m still in the thick of moving and renovating this old home amid…life. The thing that was the catalyst for this energy I’m getting back was writing and sharing a story with you. That tiny creative act of putting words on a blank surface filled me up with that sweet creative juice.
I remembered myself again. I love to make things. Shapes. Words. Colors. Something that didn’t exist before. Ugly things. Messy things. Things so layered that it’s guaranteed to hurt the eyes.
It seems that the very thing we may not feel like doing is the very thing that needs to be done. Once I sat down and started doodling with my kiddo and I experienced her adoration with marker scribbles, it was contagious. Being around creative people creates a vortex of energy that can transform heaviness into laughter, fun, conversation, and motivation.
Tiny acts that will inspire that creative spark again:
Looking through old work whether on paper or in computer files. It says “hey! I made that once upon a time and I can do it again!”
Making messy art with kids. It will be messy and challenge our inner perfectionist to make imperfect lines and wobbly shapes but that’s exactly what’s needed. Liquids, syrup, or peanut butter will likely be spilled on your paper. Kids are creative geniuses it will be humbling to see how fast they think.
Sitting in nature. Seeing the beauty that is our planet fills the heart with gratitude for this experience we call life.
Writing a little note on physical paper with a fancy pen and focusing on the feeling of scratching the letters and hearing the sounds it makes.
Making a homemade meal from scratch either by inventing it or following a recipe. Serving it on a beautiful plate and drinking from a beautifully decorated glass or cup. Art is everywhere even dishes.
Spending more time around creative, positive, supportive people that make us feel loved…no matter how weird we are.
Redesigning the physical layout of a room, moving the furniture, replacing old stuff, and thrifting items that add a pop of color to the space.
That’s all for today! Thank you for the gift of your precious time.
