Writing Something Longer Than Another To-Do List

Hi,

It’s been a while since I’ve written anything longer than a to-do list, an appointment reminder on a calendar, a grocery list, a quick text, a one-sentence update, or a follow-up email. During long breaks between long-form writing the mind must be retrained to untangle big feelings and conflicting thoughts. So here I am doing just that.

I spent a long time preparing for this comeback by refreshing the logo and overall design of my digital “home”, and of course rewatching my favorite Nora Ephron films as I worked.

“Don’t you love any place in the fall?”

Not only do leaves start to change in September, but so do attitudes. I think everyone becomes kinder in anticipation of the big holidays, the return of many pumpkin-flavored treats, colorful scarves, and fuzzy shoes that might as well be house slippers.

I can already feel the change in my body. It feels hopeful as I witness the slow color changes with each new day.

Reflections on Writing After A Long Break from It

• Writing always helps clarify feelings and ideas, especially when something feels like THE end of the world. Putting pen to paper or fingertips to keyboard simplifies our experience by creating a mirror we can look into. Giving us some distance from the situation and validating our thoughts.

• Writing provides a nonjudgemental listening ear. If we’re insecure about something, a blank page is always there to listen.

• Writing is a de-stressor. Our mind collects a beehive of emotions and thoughts every. Single. Day. It’s a lot to process. To sit with. To leave unexpressed.

• Writing things down is a proven way to achieve big dreams and goals. Example: I wrote down in January of 2024 my main goal, “Create one book dummy and pitch it”. I accomplished that goal and I also got the opportunity to illustrate another book. More preorder details on the upcoming book, How To Find Joy In A Capitalist Hellscape written by Elsie Gilmore is coming soon!

Tiny Handmade Things:

I have a batch of new wood earring designs I’m burning to get completed. The reality is that each set takes time to design and make. Handmade items remind me of a good iron cast skillet, there’s always a little extra upfront work involved but they’re made to last. Things that last a long time help reduce waste and the need to constantly replace those items. You get a special preview :)

Thank you for your precious time!

September:
Strawberry Hanging Banner

This month in the BynBeary ART CLUB we have a fun felt banner < Art Kit > to be shipped to members. Yes! Snail mail! Who doesn’t love a self-care package?

This is perfect if you need a dose of soft felt between your fingers and an hour of self-care. The kit includes everything to make the banner except glue. Sewing can be replaced with all-purpose glue, fabric glue, or felt glue.

The stencil can also be used as a painting activity, or it can be traced onto any other material as well. If you’re itching to get creative, the stencil file is also included below for immediate download.

If you’re ready to get started using the stencil > Access File Below
